"Greying yourself out can help you to avoid unwanted attention, letting you get on with your day without dramas and delays"

Whilst few of us need to be truly clandestine about our activities, a good way to avoid becoming the target for theft, attack or just unwanted attention from strangers, is to blend with your environment. Being as unremarkable as possible in any situation is often referred to as ‘becoming the Grey Man’.

There are a range of tactics that can help you slip under most people’s radar:

  • Wear the Correct Uniform – If you know the environment that you’ll be entering, choose your clothing to conform with that of others around you. Neutral, muted colours are key, as is avoiding logos and branding. This theme includes accessories – turning up at a business meeting with your notes in a tactical backpack, for instance, is likely to get you noticed.
  • Slow is Smooth, Smooth is Smart – Avoid rapid, exaggerated movements. Keep your arms close to your body. Look where you’re going, choose a route and follow it, walking steadily and without hurrying. Avoid colliding with people.
  • Shhh! – Don’t raise your voice. If you need to speak, talk quietly and calmly to the individual your engaged with, not so that the whole room can hear. This includes mobile phone conversations.
  • Don’t Look Now – Avoid eye contact. Scanning the area around you helps you to recognise and avoid potential hazards; don’t stare fixedly at the floor, but don’t meet people’s gaze.
